Whether you want to learn to play the drums as a new hobby or to perfect your skills in a specific style, our experienced music instructors at KP Music Mentors have got you covered. We teach adults and kids from the age of

  • For students at the beginning stage of their drum journey, it’s important to be exposed to the necessary foundational skills while having fun along the way.

Lessons will often cover a mix of essential topics such as technique, coordination, rudiments, reading and grooves.

Once a basic understanding of the technique is developed, lessons will begin to incorporate some basic songs to put these newfound skills to use.

Each student has a unique set of goals and interests. Once a student’s goals are established, lessons will be tailored to their specific interests and desires.

Learning to play the drums is much like building a house. Building a solid foundation through practice and understanding of the basics will make things much easier and more successful down the road.

We understand that each student learns and grows differently. Therefore, our goal is to cater to each student’s needs to help them progress in the most rewarding way possible.

  • Students that have been studying the drums for a year or two and have a good grasp of the basic functions and techniques of a drummer will advance to the intermediate phase.

This is the point at which we begin to fine-tune many of the skills that were developed as a beginning student.

Learning an instrument is a lifelong pursuit. Many of the topics covered in beginning lessons, such as technique, coordination, and rudiments, are skills that can and should continue to be improved upon.

During this phase, we will build on existing skills while exploring what makes an advanced drummer sound the way they do. As a result, coordination and rudimental exercises will become more challenging.

Students will dive deeper into their desired musical influences and understand how to become musicians, not just drummers.

At this point, we will also begin exploring the importance of time and groove through metronome related exercises. Rhythmic reading and dictation will be expanded upon.

As each student grows, their specific path will become more apparent. We hope to help them realize their goals and prepare them for the next musical level.

  • As an advanced student, you’ll have a great understanding of technique, coordination, rudiments, reading, time, etc.

At this point in a student’s development, studies will become much more specific to each student’s goals. This is often the stage that will prepare students for real-world playing opportunities.

We’ll address the skills and concepts necessary not just to play the drums at a high level but to play music at a high level. Many topics will become more conceptual to allow each student to discover their open voice at the instrument.

Do I need a full drum set to take drum lessons?

No, not necessarily. Depending on the student’s skill level and goals, a practise pad or snare drum is a great place to start.  A lot can be accomplished solely by focusing on one’s hands.

Years ago, teachers would require students to spend years at the snare drum before graduating to the full set. Although that might be quite drastic, there is some validity in that approach. Learning to master technique and rudiments will only help you to play the rest of the kit.
